Music and perfume - portals to memory.

Music and perfume - portals to memory.

There are moments when a song starts playing or a scent drifts through the air, and suddenly, time folds. You’re no longer here, in this room, in this body - you’re back there. Maybe it’s summer, maybe it’s your grandmother’s kitchen, maybe it’s a night you once loved and thought you’d forgotten.

That’s the beauty of the senses - they bypass the mind and speak straight to the soul. Music and perfume remind us that healing is not only about letting go, but also about remembering.

Remembering who we were when we loved deeply.

Remembering what safety once felt like.

Remembering moments that shaped us, broke us, softened us, awakened us.

As a therapist, I see this often - healing begins when we dare to feel again. When we allow ourselves to travel back through the emotional imprints stored in the body. A familiar song, a scent, a place - they can awaken memories that have been waiting for our compassion, not our avoidance.

Sometimes in my work with clients I invite them to travel in time through music or scents. Reconnect with memories so they can be processed in the present moment. Sometimes these moments are experiences of joy, other times are memories of sadness, grief and pain. Sometimes they offer a refuge for calm and peace and other times they provide opportunities to learn compassion for that part that felt hurt and lonely.

So I invite you to explore this kind of journey - not to get lost in nostalgia, but to reconnect with the threads of your story.

Close your eyes.

Let a song choose you.

Let a scent guide you.

Notice what arises - the sensations, the emotions, the images. Be gentle with what you find. You may discover not just pain, but tenderness; not just loss, but love that still lives quietly within you.

Sometimes, remembering is how we reclaim the parts of ourselves we left behind.

Sometimes, it’s how we realize we’ve already come so far.

May you allow music and scent to guide you home,

to the places within you that still remember love, safety, and belonging.

With care,🤍
