One of the deepest longings I hear from people in my therapy room is not just for love, but for understanding. Because love without understanding can feel hollow, like words without substance. Someone can tell you “I love you” every day and still miss the essence of who you are: your quiet fears, your unspoken dreams, the subtle things that make you you.
Being understood is different. It’s the moment someone listens, not just to reply, but to really hear you. It’s when they remember the detail you only mentioned once, or notice the shift in your tone before you even say what’s wrong. Understanding reaches into the spaces where words can’t always go.
In healthy relationships, love and understanding work together. But if you’ve ever felt unseen in love, you know how heavy it can feel. Conversely, even when love isn’t romantic or dramatic, being understood, by a friend, a therapist, a partner, can feel like lightness. It’s a nervous system settling, a soft and deep breath, a sense of “I’m safe to be who I am here.”
This is why we must choose relationships that offer emotional attunement as much as affection. It’s not about someone agreeing with everything you say, but about them being curious, present, and open enough to know who you are under the surface.
This is also why we must practice the same skill ourselves, learning to listen beyond words, to see others as whole, layered beings, not just roles they play.
To stay present so you can really hear, to listen so you can really understand.
If you’re longing for deeper connection, start by asking:
🔥Do I feel emotionally safe to be seen here?
🔥Does this person make space for my inner world, or only for the parts of me they prefer?
🔥Am I offering the same depth of understanding back?
Love is beautiful. But love with understanding is transformative. Because to be truly seen, understood, and accepted as you are is not just intimacy, it is healing.
May you find relationships where your inner world is honored, your truth is welcomed, and your presence feels like home.
May you also become that safe, attuned space for others.
With love,🤍
